What is Gabion and Reno-Mattresses?

Hexagonal gabion wire boxes and reno mattresses are innovations to solve environmental and engineering challenges. They are woven wires boxes coated with Aluzinc and pvc to prevent corrosion which can be deployed in various flexible integrated structures filled with solid insoluble stones. The difference between gabions and renos mattresses is highlighted by the 0.50m thickness demarcation. Gabions have a thickness of at least 0.50m while renos have a thickness that is below 0.50m.

The Use of Gabions & Reno-Mattresses

Gabions may be used to retail embankments and to train rivers and water channels. In such cases, the Renos mattresses are embedded into the soil to provide the foundation for the gabion-retaining structures. The voids within the stone will ensure adequate dissipation of water thereby reducing the pore pressure that might be counterproductive to the structural integrity of the gabions works. The convention is to use geotextile to separate gabions and reno-mattresses from having direct contact with the soil.

The geotextile should possess the adequate amount of tensile strength and the California bearing ratio to prevent tear and puncture respectively. The permeability coefficient of the geotextile is an important parameter while considering the choice of the geotextile to use for the separation purposes. The coefficient determines the ease with which water flows through the geotextile to enhance the structural stability of the gabion works. Gabions may be deployed for underground drainage by arranging a network of trenches lined with geotextile. Gabions are then laid within the trenches to form a honeycomb underground structure that can drain both surface and underground water to the desired place of discharge.

Gabions may also be used for shore protection to prevent erosion effects of the waves. Gabions may be dumped in a structured manner along the shore on a blanket of geotextile or alternatively, the gabion boxes may be covered by geotextile. The essence of the geotextile is to disable the migration of the soil particles while the gabions provide the mass gravity needed to keep the gabion structure in place, thereby preventing the erosion of the shore. The slope of the shore above the water level can be protected using reno-mattresses laid on top of a carefully selected geotextile. The durability of gabions, reno-mattresses and the geotextile depend on the quality of the treatments to prevent corrosion from water and chemicals. The ability of the geotextile to withstand the adverse effects of the ultraviolent rays is of prime importance when evaluating the geotextile quality.
